Articles on: 📦 Packing

How do I make sure I do not need to top up for my package?

At JustShip, we always strive to give you an accurate and transparent shipping experience. One of the most common causes of unexpected top-up charges is under-declaring your package’s size or weight. Here's how to avoid that and ensure a smooth shipping process from the start:

Measure Your Parcel Carefully 📏
When filling in the shipping form, you’ll be asked to provide the dimensions (Length x Width x Height in cm) and weight (kg) of your parcel. Be as accurate as possible, round up your measurements if needed, and always measure from the widest points, including any bulging areas or protrusions.

Even a small underestimation — like 1 cm — can bump your package into the next 0.5 kg chargeable weight bracket (we use the higher of either the actual or volumetric weight), which will increase your shipping cost.

Include a Buffer (Especially If You Opt for Packing Services) 📦
If you’ve opted for JustShip’s packing services, our team will pack your item using our packing materials, which typically includes boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and foam (if needed).

To avoid a top-up later, kindly consider including a buffer to your estimated dimensions before submitting the form:

Item TypeRecommended Buffer per Dimension
Non-Fragile Item (e.g. Regular Clothing)2-4 cm
Fragile or Bulky Item (e.g. painting, glassware)10–15 cm

This buffer accounts for both our packing materials and courier packaging standards for safe and secure transit.

Estimate the Weight Realistically 🧮
If you don’t have a scale, try estimating the weight conservatively based on your item type. Again, rounding up slightly is safer than underestimating — since you’re only charged based on the verified final weight, any overpaid amount will be refunded.

Final Checks & What Happens Next
Once your parcel arrives at our warehouse, our team will verify its final weight and dimensions before shipping.

If you’ve under-declared your measurements, we’ll inform you and request a top-up for the difference.
Likewise, if you’ve over-declared the measurements, we will refund you the excess amount via your original payment method.

By following these tips, you’ll have the best chance of submitting the right details upfront — avoiding any billing surprises, delays, or shipment hiccups.😊
